BLACKCOFEE JOINS KINETIC P ON TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER AT 8PM (gmt)

Nathi ''BLACKCOFEE '' Maphumulo does not need introduction to the Pushfm audiences. To those who don’t know him, he is an international DJ/Producer based in South Africa. He is a member of the unfashionable urban soul trio “SHANA” in South Africa; he is one of the few Club DJs in the country who genuinely understands the precise function of a music deejay: he does not simply re-mix songs; he re-interprets their previously unimagined musical possibilities and therefore quietly reclaims the composition as his own. When he debuted with his interpretation of Hugh Masekela’s rambunctious jazz hit Stimela (2005 original South African release; 2008 UK release), subsequently to be the lead single off the self-titled 12-track debut album, by re-featuring the old musician to guest vocal anew Black Coffee simply demonstrated how it was possible to re-work the South African canon music vault into club music, acceptable to both the youth and the adults, a feat not easily achievable in the instant festive hit-obsessed market that is South Africa: it requires a decidedly original-inclined, singular mind such as that of Black Coffee to be able to pursue an original music trajectory.

He forged his musical background with his school choir and by studying the keyboard. He studied music in Durban because he felt that as a producer, he had to deepen his overall musical knowledge, develop his listening skills and advance his knowledge of music theory.

On the global deep/soulful house music community, he is best known for scoping a South African Dance Music award for Best Album in 2006, his latest release track "Turn Me On feat. Bucie" under Ralf Gum's GOGO music label toping the charts at #1 on traxsource.com downloads during between January-February 2009; staying on top for over 4 weeks. He is juggling both professions, being a DJ and being a full-time musician.

To date his fame is by far not bordered to South Africa anymore, as he was for example chosen in 2006 and in 2007 to represent South Africa at the Red Bull academy in Barcelona, played numerous gigs in Europe, released on Real Tone Records and has been part of the South African Music Conference (a Miami WMC/Amsterdam Dance Music type of Conference) for three conservative years (2005.2006 and 2007). He did a remixing session at the South African music conference, teaching 1 000 delegates skills on how to be the best remixer. He performed alongside top International DJ’s including Louie Vega, Alix Alvares, Franck Roger, Mr V, Vinny DA Vinci, Charles Webster, DJ Spinna, Osun Lade, Quentin Harris, and others.

For Black Coffee the hardest thing about the music industry is that there aren't many people who'll do the groundwork for you. “If you want the world to hear your material, work very hard and convince your DJ friends to play your tracks either at gigs or in clubs so you can gauge the audience response to your music” says Black Coffee.

Recently he finished working on his third album titled ‘Home Brewed’ that features top South African artists such as Ringo, Zonke, Bucie and Hugh Masekela. The album is now launching at some of the cities around Southern Africa and already a top seller including his hit video release Juju (Black Coffee & Zakes Bantwini) available on YouTube. He is also getting ready for several international bookings including London, New York, and the 25th Anniversary of Miami Winter Conference in March 2010.

ON TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER AT 8PM (gmt), HE JOINS PUSHFM’s KINETIC P for a live mix set and a chat.
